 Did You Know?

  • Dopamine Dilemma: During the detoxification process, individuals may experience physical withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, headaches, and fatigue. These symptoms can be exacerbated by fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

  • Age and Hormonal Changes: Women who are pregnant, postpartum, or going through menopause often experience hormonal fluctuations that increase their vulnerability to substance use. Changing hormones, particularly testosterone, can influence substance use in men during midlife.

  • The Cycle of Cravings: Specifically, the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, associated with lower estrogen levels and increased progesterone, can be a period of heightened vulnerability for women in recovery. Many experts also believe that, for women in recovery, the brain becomes highly sensitive to PMS symptoms. And it's that increased level of sensitivity that can ultimately lead some women to relapse.

  • Testosterone Trouble: Low testosterone can be associated with mood changes, including depression, irritability, and reduced motivation, which can increase the risk of substance use as a means of coping with these symptoms. Individuals experiencing the effects of low testosterone might self-medicate with stimulants to address fatigue, lack of focus, or low libido, leading to stimulant dependence over time.

  • Nutrient Deficiencies Matter: Additionally, deficiencies in vitamin D, iron, magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins have been associated with a range of behavioral issues, including anxiety, irritability, depression, hyperactivity, and even aggression that can lead to relapse.

  • Gut Brain Connection: Dysbiosis, often associated with poor diet, stress, or substance use itself, can disrupt the gut-brain axis, impacting mood, inflammation, and even drug metabolism, potentially leading individuals to turn to substances to self-medicate.

  • Hormone Hijinks: Studies indicate that the menopausal transition and postmenopausal period can be a time of increased risk for alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in women, particularly among those who were previously moderate-to-heavy drinkers. Conversely, some women who were not excessive drinkers may transition to excessive drinking during these stages.
